The Royal Manhattan Cocktail – A Cognac Variation from Rémy Martin

Rémy Martin touts its 1738 Royal Accord Cognac as a mixer for high-end cocktails.

A Manhattan cocktail is usually made with whiskey as the main liquor and mixed with sweet vermouth, and bitters.

Rémy Martin adds a new twist on the Manhattan by substituting its cognac for whiskey. Rémy Martin introduces the Royal Manhattan on their website as follows:

“This regal drink is part of a collection of cocktails named after New York City’s five boroughs. Appropriately conceived in the city, the Manhattan is now enjoyed just about everywhere else.”

Indeed, the origins of the Manhattan cocktail date back to the 1870s where it was was invented at the Manhattan Club in New York City in support of Samuel J. Tilden, governor of New York and Presidential candidate in 1876. While Tilden lost his quest for the Presidency in the Electoral College (he won the popular vote), the Manhattan cocktail has been a winner and is often considered one of the handful of staple cocktails every aspiring bartender should know how to make.
