Dobbé is a Cognac House that dates back to 1787 when the Dobbé family first acquired a few acres of vineyards in the Charente region of France. Today, eight generations later, the Dobbé family continues the tradition of fine cognac making. The Dobbé estate is run by Michel Dobbé and his son-in law Nicolas.

The Dobbé family’s thirty five acres of vineyards are located predominately in the Petit Champagne growing Cru with about a third of the vineyards located in the adjoining Fin Bois growing cru on the banks of the Charente River. The family’s Petite Champagne vineyards, planted with Ugni Blanc grapes, are in the Prunelas estate in Salignac-sur-Charente about six miles due west of Cognac.

Dobbé V.S.

We tasted Dobbé V.S. neat in a cognac snifter. Here are our notes.

Price

Dobbé V.S. is pricey for a cognac of its designation. It is priced higher than any of the big four cognac houses (Hennessy, Rémy Martin, Martell and Courvoisier) V.S. offerings.

Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)

Age: Aged at least 2 and a half years. Dobbé V.S. is produced and bottled on the family estate in Salignac-sur-Charente. It isdistilled in two 25-hectolitre Charente stills and aged in French Limosin Oak.

The Bottle/Label

Bordeaux style bottle with paper sticker with Dobbé logo and name on the front. (see above)

The Color

Light copper.

The Nose (Nez)

Orange blossom and vanilla.

Mouth (En Bouche)

Grape, orange, tea, hazelnuts, vanilla and oak notes.

Finish

Surprisingly long white pepper spice finish.

Overall

Dobbé V.S. is a very flavorful and complex VS that shows its youthful age. Its fresh flavors mix well with a number of citrus-based cognac cocktails like the Sidecar. Dobbé V.S. is also enjoyable for casual sipping. Dobbé recommends that its V.S. be mixed with soda water or ginger ale. We tried it with ginger ale with a twist of lime and found it to be a fruity yet dry concoction.
