Counterfeit Cognac?

Cognac is a unique craft product whose makers must follow strict guidelines set down by the Le Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) in ordered to be labelled and marketed as “Cognac”.

Because of the arduous process and skill required to make Cognac and because Cognac can only be made in the Cognac region of France and from grapes grown in the region, Cognac commands a premium price to other brandies. The exquisite nature and desirability of Cognac also makes it a prime target for counterfeiters.

The BNIC recently took part in 9th annual Anti-Counterfeiting Workshop in Wemmel, near Brussels. The BNIC’s participation in the workshop helped to raise awareness of Cognac counterfeit issues and to train Belgian customs officers, police and agents employed by the anti-counterfeiting unit of the Ministry of Economy.
